An electrophysiology postdoctoral position is available in 2023 for a highly motivated postdoctoral fellow to join the Department of Pharmacology at the College of Medicine at the University of Arizona (Rajesh Khanna, PhD – PI; http://www.pharmacology.arizona.edu/faculty/RKhanna.cfm) to study novel small molecules and small biologics as potential analgesics.  Our work focuses on targeting regulators of voltage-gated calcium and sodium channels as a potential strategy for relief of chronic pain.

The methods employed by our laboratory center around in vitro electrophysiology and whole-animal behavioral pharmacology.  Other techniques in immunohistochemistry, in silico drug design and protein chemistry are employed to support findings from our behavioral and physiological experiments. We are searching for a postdoctoral level (Ph.D., M.D., D.O., D.V.M.) scientist with a strong background in whole cell voltage clamp electrophysiology.  Experience with small animal handling and cell culture and patch clamp electrophysiology (preferably whole cell) is essential.

A background in neuroscience, cell biology, or biochemistry will be ideal.  Experience in functional imaging and isolating primary neurons (dorsal root ganglion or cortical or hippocampal) from rodent models is desirable, but not required. The laboratory is located in Life Sciences North on the College of Medicine campus of the University of Arizona in Tucson, Arizona. Our mission is to provide quality preclinical and clinical education in pharmacology and therapeutics for medical students, to educate and train graduate and postdoctoral biomedical scientists, to carry out basic research of recognized excellence, and to participate in governance and leadership in the College of Medicine at The University of Arizona and in appropriate national scientific and professional societies. In summary, this is an opportunity for a postdoctoral research fellow to learn developmental and behavioral neuroscience and generate a significant quantity of publishable data in a two-year period.  With successful subsequent funding there is ample opportunity to continue this work beyond the initial two-year time frame.

Interested individuals should send a CV, a statement describing research interests and career goals, and the names and contact information of three individuals who can provide letters of references to: Dr. Rajesh Khanna, Associate Professor, Department of Pharmacology, University of Arizona, 1501 North Campbell Avenue, LSN 650, PO Box 245050, Tucson, AZ 85724, United States, Phone: +1 520 626 4281, Fax: +1 520 626-2204, E-mail: rkhanna@email.arizona.edu
